A Vision of Stewardship for Catholic Educational Leadership

 

A Conference for Governing Boards and Heads of Schools

August 5-7,2010

Goal:

Participants who complete this conference will be able to:

  • Describe the roots of Catholic Education
  • Articulate the relationship among Church, sponsor, and edcational organization
  • Relate one's personal faith and values to his or her organization commitment
  • Explain the mission driven issues of the eudcational organization
  • Identify one's approach to Catholic Identity as an educator
  • Apply the professional values and obligations associated with the role of leadership in catholic education - and the fundamental justice values underlying catholic education to management issues

Arrival - afternoon of August 5. Program begins Thursday evening with reception at 5:00pm and ends with lunch at noon on Saturday.

Overview of the Program

Five presentations from Washington Theological Union faculty:

  • Reflecting on Experience from a Faith Perspective
    • Presenter: Kathleen Brown, D.Min.
  • History at the roots of Catholic Education in the USA within the framework of the immigrant Church; development of schools sponsored by religious communities
    • Presenter Fred Tillotson, O.Carm (STL)
      • This presentation will describe:
        • The evolution of elementary and secondary Catholic Education in the United States today, moving from a Catholic "ghetto" to a new reality, using data from Pew and Davidson Studies
        • The evolution of governance from all members of a religious community to lay leadership; Vatican II's call to lay leadership.
        • Different frame for organized religion.
  • Relationships that exist within sponsored ministy; canonical requirements
    • Presenter: Rev. James Coriden, JCD, JD
      • This presentation will describe:
        • The evolution of sponsored works from the "family business" to a new model of accountability and excellence.
        • Canonical relationships, including ownership of property, ect. role of the Board of Directors, stewardship, education.
        • The relationship between the religious community and the institutional Church: reserved powers; limited power of the board.
        • The varied relationships that different communities have with the Church; i.e. pontifical; diocesan.
  • Relationship of personal values to organizational commitment-transformational learning
    • Presenter: Kathleen Brown, D.Min
      • This presentation will describe:
        • Will be invitational in tone and demonstrat how one's personal spirituality affects the culture of hte organization and its ministry.
        • Leaders must both be open to personal tranformation and be agents of the transformation in the organization
        • Leaders are generative (Governance as Leadership).
        • Mission/values of the organization take precedence over persoanl views/values.
        • How to create a group culture based on organization's values.
  • Mission- driven issues in education - moral and ethical considerations
    • Presenter: Frederick Tillotson, O.Carm (STL)

    Use of case studies to illustrate moral and ethical issues in the ministry of education
